This volume brings together research on contemporary uses of historical photographs from Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, conducted between 1880 and 1980. Case studies discuss how photos of the past, in the light of contemporary times and the challenges of the digital age, are answered, recontextualized and resignified. The volume poses new challenges for visual anthropology, highlighting the contrast between fluency, sense of belonging and affection, to explore the contemporary significance of historical photography in processes of constitution of memory, ethnographic imagination and identity in Latin America.

In this article, we present our experiences as researchers - activists, who have analyzed the US - Mexico border through our ethnographies. We will present reflections about our positionalities and subjectivities as activists, teachers, scholars, and residents of this border region. We conduct two different ways of activist research that we call 1) activist ethnography in the classroom, and 2) activist ethnography on the streets. We discuss the characteristics of eachone of these forms of activist research, the commonalities and differencesof both ways. We present our findings involving our own autobiographies and a theoretical analysis drawing from other activist - researchers who also use ethnography for research and activism.

In this article, we reflect upon the question of what does it entail to conduct engaged ethnography in contexts of armed conflict. The authors describe their ethnographic experiences in Bellavista - Bojayá - Chocó and Bahía Málaga - Valle del Cauca in Colombia. The authors conclude that engaged ethnography in contexts of armed conflict ought to be collaborative developing long-term relationships with the communities in which we work.

De mediación sin intérpretes a escribanos bilingües. Diglosia, bilingüismo y escritura en la provincia de Chayanta (Potosí) durante la República boliviana (1830-1950)
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Fondo Editorial, 2018-12-21) Platt, Tristan
Bilingualism made interpreters unnecessary in early RepublicanBolivia. Citizen judges of the Peace functioned as Spanish-Aymarabilingual scribes in Chayanta Province (Potosí), while new bilingualCitizen tribute-collectors (recaudadores) replaced hereditaryAymara-speaking moiety Curacas. In Peru and Ecuador tributewas abolished in the 1850s, but in Bolivia it continued till the 21stcentury. By the 20th century, Quechua had become the language ofthe Macha Ayllu, and the moieties took back the Curacazgos. Thisarticle examines the resurgence of the moiety Curaca Recaudadores, and their persistence as tribute’collectors for most of the 20thcentury. Macha moiety Curacas were illiterate, and monolingualin Quechua, but had Ayllu support, and could administer usingbilingual mestizo scribes. They formed a Spanish-language Archive,an invaluable source for building a Republican ethnohistory of 20thcentury rural literacy, Ayllu organization, social movements andAyllu-State relations. Among its 740 documents the Archive containsthree Aymara-influenced circulars from La Paz, written in aSpanish-derived linguistic amalgam between 1936 and 1946. Theyshed light on indian political thought in a period when the Ayllu-State pact and «indian law» were being recovered, before and afterthe Revolution of 1952.

      ¿Es otra Cosmopolítica Posible?
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Fondo Editorial, 2018-12-21) Blaser, Mario
This translation of the article - originally published in English - Is anotherCosmopolitics possible? by Mario Blaser makes available to our academic community not only a discussion on a case of conflict between Canadian state institutions, scientific practices and indigenous peoples, comparable with similar conflicts that occur in the Latin American context, but also a good introduction to relatively recent concepts, and relevant ones, to understand these conflicts.

Juan Ansión: trayectoria profesional y aportes a la antropología peruana
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Fondo Editorial, 2018-12-21) Ames, Patricia
This article addresses the professional trajectory of the Belgian-Peruvian anthropologist and sociologist Juan Ansión. His main research interests and his development over the years are presented, from his early work around mythical thinking in the Andean world to his sustained commitment to the issue of education in rural communities, expectations and projects on education and migration, and the impact of political violence in school. An issue that intersects the previous two - interculturality - arises from the need to conceptualize a new proposal that allows us to understand and challenge the relations of subordination and discrimination between cultures that Peruvian society experiences. Ansión will contribute significantly to the discussion around interculturality to this day, covering not only education, but also new fields, such as justice and health. The article addresses his role as a university professor, first at the National University of San Cristóbal de Huamanga - with which he maintained a close relationship over the years - and then at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, where he taught throughout more than three decades.

This article illustrates the characteristics of two Lima-based organizations of persons displaced by the internal armed conflict in Peru (1980-2000), and the way in which these characteristics create opportunities and obstacles for access to the Program of Collective Reparations —a key element of the Peruvian reparations policy—. This program provides funding to a collective beneficiary for institutional strengthening or economic entrepreneurship.Based on bibliographic review, interviews with members of these organizations as well as ethnographic field work, I show that the  characteristics of each displaced persons’ organization together with the type of collective project they choose create scenarios of challenges and possibilities which pose difficulties to these groups, requiring collective action capacities which they do not necessarily have. This results in a de facto situation that undermines their right to reparation. Therefore, I argue the importance not only of analizing the reparations offer and its quality, but also the characteristics of the demand, that is, of the beneficiary groups of displaced persons and their internal interactions, and how these factors shape access to reparations.

The book brings together the works carried out by Juan Ossio over fifty years; developed from his field research, analysis of historical documents and personal testimonies. The author uses the ethnographic and historical method to identify and analyze the common characteristics that articulate different aspects of economic, political, traditional, ritual and kinship organization in the communities of the Andean territory under cultural characteristics that approach a matrix.
