La aportación lexicográfica de Hermilio Valdizán: análisis del "Diccionario de medicina peruana" (1923-1961)

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to present an unknown text in the fields of philology and the history of science: the Diccionario de medicina peruana (Dictionary of Peruvian Medicine), by Hermilio Valdizán (1923-1961). To this end, we analyze the macrostructure, microstructure and iconostructure of the nine volumes that constitute this monumental contribution to the historical, anthropological and ethnographic studies of the pre-Hispanic and colonial culture of Peru, to which Valdizán dedicated more than two decades of tireless documentary and compilation work. We offer a study of the lexical units included in this lexicographical repertoire, as well as the areas of specialization to which the word list compiled by Valdizán belongs, the lexicographical sources that he used for the preparation of his work and the presence of the indigenous element. This will be accompanied by a review of the biobibliographical, encyclopedic and linguistic contributions preserved in this dictionary, which is revealed as a fundamental piece to understand and (re)construct the medical history of Peru

El objetivo de este trabajo es dar a conocer una obra apenas estudiada y, en buena medida, desconocida en el ámbito de la filología y de la historia de la ciencia: el Diccionario de medicina peruana, de Hermilio Valdizán (1923-1961). Para ello, analizaremos pormenorizadamente la macroestructura, microestructura e iconoestructura de los nueve volúmenes que conforman esta monumental aportación a los estudios históricos, antropológicos y etnográficos de la cultura prehispánica y colonial de Perú, a la que Valdizán dedicó más de dos décadas de infatigable labor documental y compiladora. Ofrecemos, pues, un estudio de las unidades léxicas consignadas en este repertorio lexicográfico, así como de las áreas de especialidad a las que se adscribe el lemario registrado por Valdizán, las fuentes lexicográficas de las que se sirvió para la confección de su obra o la presencia del elemento indígena documentado en la misma, junto a una revisión del aporte biobibliográfico, enciclopédico y lingüístico atesorado en este diccionario, el cual se revela como una pieza fundamental para conocer y (re)construir la historia médica del Perú.
