Los cuasicristales: un premio Nobel a la perseverancia

Abstract

This year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Prof. Dan Shechtman for the discovery of quasicrystals. Quasicrystals are a kind of crystals which violate someprinciples formulated by the modern science of crystallography,namely because of their aperiodicity. Dan Shechtman proved that this form of matter is different from the common crystals. The discovery of quasicrystals was unexpected and received harsh criticism. Ultimately, experimental data confirmed Shechtman’s hypothesis. Quasicrystals have been extensively studied and their unique properties have been applied successfully in different scenarios.

El premio Nobel en Química fue otorgado al Dr. Dan Shechtman por el descubrimiento de los cuasicristales. Los cuasicristales son un tipo de cristales que violan algunos principios formulados por la ciencia moderna de la cristalografía, especialmente debido a su aperiodicidad. Dan Shechtman demostró que esta forma de materia es cristalina pero es diferente de los cristales comunes. El descubrimiento de los cuasicristales fue inesperado y recibió duras críticas. Sin embargo, resultados experimentales confirmaron definitivamente la hipótesis de Shechtman. Los cuasicristales han sido estudiados extensamente y sus propiedades únicas han sido aplicadas satisfactoriamente en diferentes escenarios.
