La unión de los intelectos como creación en el Periphyseon de Eriúgena

Abstract

This paper analyses Eriugena’s frequent use of a simile in his Periphyseon to illustrate the nature of the manifestation of divine nature. Just as God, causa omnium, manifests Himself in his effects, the human intellect, in order to express itself, manifests itself in certain forms and signs that make it possible for it to be understood by other intellects. Although the simile seeks to illustrate the paradox of theophany – the fact that God, while revealing Himself, remains hidden –, the analysis of the image demonstrates the importance of the figure of the other for both human intellect and divinity, since, dialectically, this other enables us, in a certain way – the only possible one – to recognize ourselves.

El trabajo analiza el uso recurrente de un símil que hace Eriúgena en su Periphyseon para ilustrar la naturaleza de la manifestación de la naturaleza divina. Así como Dios, causa omnium, se manifiesta en sus efectos, de manera similar, el intelecto humano, para expresarse, se manifiesta en determinadas formas y signos que le permiten ser comprendido por otros intelectos. Si bien el símil pretende ilustrar la paradoja de la teofanía —el hecho de que al revelarse Dios permanece oculto—, el análisis de la imagen demuestra la importancia que, tanto como el intelecto humano como para la divinidad, tiene la figura del otro, en la medida en que, dialécticamente, ese otro nos permite, en cierta medida, reconocernos.
