One of the pillars of the economy in Peru is the mining sector, which represents 10% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the last decade. Being a mining country with a strong dependence on the price of the metals, regulated by the market, and the current situation as a result of the pandemic, it becomes mandatory to know the State of Quality inside the companies that works in the mining sector, with a view of seeking high competitiveness and productivity. At moment there are no studies focused on the mining sector, so this research will serve to begging its diagnosis. The objective of this research was to demonstrate that mining companies that have a quality management system based on ISO 9001, have superior performance in the implementations of Total Quality Management, using the nine-success factor proposed by Benzaquen. The population was limited to the general production in the mining regime, made up of 89 mining companies, information taken from MINEM. The research was based on a statistical error of 10% and a confidence level of 95%, resulting in a sample of 47 mining companies. The research carried out showed that there is indeed a significant difference in companies that have a QSM in comparison with those who don’t, however it also revealed the different fields in which the culture of quality should be reinforced. This study should generate an impulse and interest for small and artisanal mining in applying this methodology in the search for the optimization of productivity and competitiveness.
