El padre Joaquín García Sánchez, OSA. Un geógrafo innato

Abstract

This article presents briefly the distinguished Augustinian missionary, Cavalier of the Amazon, honorary professor of the Department of Humanities of the PUCP, Father Joaquín García Sánchez OSA. His extraordinary geographical itinerary is recounted from his childhood walking the landscapes of the Sabero mining basin (León, Spain) to his arrival and immersion in the Loreto Amazon. Builder of intercultural bridges, Father Joaquín was a man of dialogues that were transformed into works (Center for Theological Studies of the Amazon, Amazonian Library, Irapay, Shupihui, Kanatari, Monumenta Amazónica, among others). For more than 55 years, he dedicated himself to living in, with, and for the Amazon from all its biophysical, sociocultural, economic, environmental, and political diversities. His studies, listening, generosity and closeness to the most relegated, his defence of peace and democracy were combined with the development of an indigenous pastoral and ecotheology. Its impressive geographical horizon integrates the living and lived dimensions of the Amazonian territories, memories and interscalarity. With “Amazonium”, Father Joaquín left us an exceptional scientific, moral and alteretic heritage, inviting us to make this dream our own.

Este artículo presenta brevemente al insigne misionero agustino, geógrafo innato, profesor honorario de departamento de Humanidades de la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, el padre Joaquín García Sánchez, OSA. Se relata su extraordinario itinerario geográfico desde su infancia caminando los paisajes de la cuenca minera de Sabero, León, España, hasta su llegada e inmersión en la Amazonía loretana. Constructor de puentes interculturales, el padre Joaquín era hombre de diálogos que se transformaron en obras (Centro de Estudios Teológicos de la Amazonía, Biblioteca Amazónica, Irapay, Shupihui, Kanatari, Monumenta Amazónica entre otras). Durante más de 55 años se dedicó a vivir en, con y para la Amazonía desde todas sus diversidades biofísicas, socioculturales, económicas, ambientales y políticas. Sus estudios, escucha, generosidad y cercanía con los más relegados; su defensa de la paz y la democracia se conjugaron con el desarrollo de una pastoral indígena y ecoteología. Su impresionante horizonte geográfico integra las dimensiones vivas y vividas de los territorios amazónicos, las memorias y la interescalaridad. Con “Amazonium”, el padre Joaquín nos dejó una herencia científica, moral y alterética excepcional, invitándonos a hacer nuestro este sueño.
