La popularidad de las novelas Rosemary's Baby y The Exorcist, entre otras, ha hecho mucho para promulgar de nuevo creencias antes comunes en la vida de norteamérica y de frecuente expresión en la literatura de los Estados Unidos desde sus comienzos. Aunque casi abandonadas como temas literarios a fines del siglo XIX, esas creencias en el mundo sobrenatural y en sus habitantes angélicos y diabólicos continuaban en la vida cotidiana, pues procedían de las mismas raíces del cristianismo.
