In 1735 Baumgarten published his Philosophical Reflections on Poetry. There he develops for the first time the idea of a science of sensibility capable of apprehending the idea of beauty in art; a science which he denominates aesthetics. This quest to determine what beauty is and what the status of aesthetic experience within the edifice of knowledge is seems to be more related to the Leibnizian approaches to sensitivity than to the Wolffian gnoseological framework, not only because of the way in which it deals with the concepts of perfection, beauty and truth, but mainly due to the fact that, in the development of Baumgarten’s research on sensitivity, mechanisms of subjectivation similar to the ones presented by Leibniz seem to be deployed —mechanisms characterized by a strong perspectival background. In view of this, this paper investigates the Leibnizian influence on Baumgartian philosophy, and specifically the question about how the concept of petites perceptions, as a central element of Leibniz’s perspectivist conception, influences the notion of aesthetics developed by Baumgarten.

Although Bachelard’s entire philosophy of imagination is affected by a symbolic materialism which can play a mediating role in reverie’s path, it is also true that the purpose of art, especially in poetry, is the search for truth, the lightning flash of insight, the deep apprehension of being itself, an experience that can hardly be given if we interpose, between the being of the thing/object and human subject, concepts or categories that seek a higher comprehension of the operational phenomena at stake, but which ultimately drown the saying of what is being shown to us. The poetic image must be a vehicle capable of symbolizing reality by connecting it with the imaginary, while being at the same time that uncaused force which brings about the ontological novelty capable of building a new anthropocosmos.

--- Self-knowledge and Creation of a Cosmos. Dimensions of sofia in Plato’s Thought”. Even though the concept of sophia holds a central role in Plato’s thought, the few passages of the Platonic dialogues in which this concept is examined directly have not been adequately analyzed until now. In the consideration of these passages, one can prove that sophia is a living unity of knowledge and action based on the experience of the supreme principle, that is, of the Good. This experience leads man to transcend himself and to become similar to the Intellect (nous) that creates and guides the universe. This way, man becomes capable of transforming his own life into a cosmos that, permeated by the Good, reveals itself as a manifestation of true beauty.
