Abstract
This paper analyses otherness as a theoretical proposal by Unamuno and its relevance to respond to the conflicts of human life. Otherness includes the other without seeking his domination or exclusion and considers conflict as necessary for the vital force. The paper traces the neologism altereutrality throughout Unamuno's work. Furthermore, the two dimensions of otherness are pointed out, which are: a) Phenomenal (phenotype) and b) Ontological (genotype). Next, the special type of dialectic that underlies alterutrality is examined. Finally, the notion of civil war in Unamuno's thought is interpreted as an ideal of fruitful conflict that is indispensable to the force of life.
