Figuración antropomórfica del virus y la enfermedad VIH/sida

Abstract

The hypothesis that viruses are not devoid of humanity is reviewed. This is done within the framework of what Latour defines as “scientific humanities”, which call into question the idea of autonomy of sciences and techniques The procedure followed consists of the analysis of documents produced to refer to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the disease it causes, AIDS, paying special attention to how these discursive constructions fill it with humanity until it gives it an anthropomorphic figuration. The objective is to show that today living human life can no longer do without thinking and acting in relation to viruses, because they have entered the “surrounding world” of human beings, which has relevant political and social repercussions and that has been recently discussed from various disciplines. It would not be a solely medical relationship, restricted to laboratories, hospitals and treatments. Among the findings offered are, on the one hand, the evidence that viruses are not only scientific objects, but bearers of significance; and, on the other, the exhibition of how human beings trigger their symbolic-significant metamorphosis turning them into characters capable of modifying the social body, the imaginary, symbols, relationships between people, institutions, and even public policies.

El artículo revisa la hipótesis de que los virus no están vacíos de humanidad, en el marco de lo que Latour define como «humanidades científicas», que ponen en tela de juicio la idea de autonomía de las ciencias y las técnicas. El procedimiento seguido consiste en el análisis de documentos producidos para referirse al virus de inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH) y a la enfermedad que causa, sida, poniendo especial atención en cómo esas construcciones discursivas lo llenan de humanidad hasta darle una figuración antropomórfica. El objetivo es mostrar que hoy en día vivir la vida humana ya no puede prescindir de pensar y actuar en relación con los virus, porque han entrado al «mundo circundante» de los seres humanos, lo cual tiene repercusiones políticas y sociales relevantes, lo que se ha discutido recientemente desde varias disciplinas. No se trataría de una relación solo médica, restringida a laboratorios, hospitales y tratamientos. Entre los hallazgos que se ofrecen están, por un lado, la evidencia de que los virus no son solo objetos científicos, sino portadores de significación; y, por otro, la exhibición de cómo el ser humano detona su metamorfosis simbólico-significativa, convirtiéndolos en personajes capaces de modificar el cuerpo social, el imaginario, los símbolos, las relaciones entre personas, las instituciones y hasta las políticas públicas.
