Abstract
The aim of the present study is to identify whether there is a relationship between the internalization of beauty ideals and self-objectification in 109 adolescent girls from Lima, Peru. In order to develop the study, the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire 4 (SATAQ-4) and the Objectified Body Consciousness Scale (OBCS) were applied in a sample of secondary students of form three, four and five of an all-girls school. The results show direct correlations between the areas of self-objectification, body shame and body surveillance, and the areas of the SATAQ-4. On the other hand, regarding the specific objectives of the investigation, it was found that both questionnaires had positive correlations with the content of social media, who where selected by the participants as their favorites. Furthermore, there were significant differences found in self-objectification and internalization of beauty ideals between the girls who posted or not selfies and photos where their bodies were exposed on social media. Finally a small correlation was found concerning the relationship between self-objectification and social-media usage. As a conclusion, it can be stated that there appears to be an existent relationship between the internalization of beauty ideals and self-objectification in adolescent girls.
