Urban growth in Metropolitan Lima has been conditioned by the lack of policies for access to social housing, which has led to informal ownership becoming the main mechanism for accessing urban land and obtaining homeownership. This has motivated the emergence of groups dedicated to land trafficking to meet this demand and has contributed to the rapid urbanization of the city's periphery. However, this activity has resulted in the loss of natural areas such as coastal hills (lomas costeras) characterized by their biological richness. Faced with this problem, the intervention of hill defenders such as the Lomas de Paraíso Association, in the district of Villa María del Triunfo, has been the key factor in the conservation of this ecosystem in the face of land traffickers. Therefore, the objective of this research is to understand the dynamics and experiences of hill defenders in the protection of threatened coastal hills by land trafficking. A qualitative methodology was employed through spatial analysis (2013-2021), recognition of the study area, interviews with hill defenders, and participation in their activities. Among the main results, the magnitude of invasions in recent years and the slow or even nonexistent action by local authorities, resulting in a progressive increase of this occupations are evident. However, the work of hill defenders has prevented the advancement of invasions in specific areas through their alliances with the population and other organizations. This research received funding from CONCYTEC/PROCIENCIA Program and is part of the Irregular and Informal Urban Growth in Arequipa, Lima, and Tacna project by CISEPA - Pontifical Catholic University of Peru
