Construir y reconstruir: Una aproximación al sistema educativo peruano antes y después de la Guerra del Pacífico

Abstract

After the War of the Pacific, education became crucial in addressing the lack of patriotism and the perceived “indigenous inferiority”—factors that, according to intellectual critique of the time, had led to the defeat by Chile. This article aims to analyze how the Peruvian state restructured the educational system during the period of National Reconstruction. It explores the challenges and approaches of Peruvian schooling throughout the nineteenth century. By examining the development of educational institutions up to 1879, it seeks to understand the reconstruction process in the post-war years until the late nineteenth century. Analyzing education in these periods allows us to understand its role during the foundational moments of the Republic.

Tras el fin de la Guerra del Pacífico, la educación adoptó un rol importante para erradicar la falta de patriotismo y atender la “inferioridad indígena”; factores que, según la crítica intelectual de la época, habían provocado la derrota ante Chile. En esa línea, este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar de qué manera el Estado peruano recompuso el sistema educativo durante la Reconstrucción Nacional. Para entender este proceso, este artículo explora los distintos desafíos y enfoques que la educación peruana enfrentó y adoptó a lo largo del siglo decimonónico. De esta manera, a partir del análisis del proceso de construcción del aparato educativo hasta el año 1879, busca entender el proceso de reconstrucción en los años de la posguerra hasta finales del siglo XIX. En ese sentido, el análisis de la educación en ambos periodos nos permite entender la función que se le asignó en momentos fundacionales de la República.
