A conceptual proposal about thirdness is made on the basis of the analysis of the different usages and meanings of this term in the psychoanalytic tradition. That also takes into consideration its conceptual relationship with close psychoanalytic concepts, in order to explore its likelihood as a facilitator of the psychoanalytic process. It is suggested that thirdness relates to the activity of some mental processes inscribed in a psychic or relational triadic structure, supported by the use of thirds, where the main issue is to put in relation the three angles of such a structure. It is emphasized that this is a type of mental processing characterized by the linking, that involves realities concerned with the intrapsychic, relational and social. Functions, components and properties of thirdness and its connection with pathology and clinical work are established as well as some foundational elements over which a therapeutic agency would be set up upon.
