Arquitectos censados en Chile 1865-1895: la expansión de la profesión

Abstract

Architects who practicing in Chile during the second half of the 19th century have been poorly documented due to the scarcity of studies on the subject, which generally focus on emblematic works and relevant positions. According to the national census reports of 1865, 1875, 1885, and 1895, “architect” was among the registered professions, but this statistical background has not been addressed in our disciplinary historiography. Through a quantitative analysis of these results, we have obtained an insight into the universe of architects, their expansion, hierarchical centers in the territory, and groups of foreigners by nationality, which allows us to contribute to the knowledge of the practice of the profession during this period.

Los arquitectos que ejercieron en Chile durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX han sido poco identificados debido a la escasez de estudios sobre el tema, que generalmente se centran en obras emblemáticas y cargos relevantes. De acuerdo con los informes censales nacionales de 1865, 1875, 1885 y 1895, figuraba entre las profesiones registradas la de «arquitecto», pero estos antecedentes estadísticos no han sido trabajados por nuestra historiografía disciplinar. Mediante un análisis cuantitativo de estos resultados, hemos obtenido una visión del universo de arquitectos, su expansión, focos jerárquicos en el territorio y los grupos de extranjeros por nacionalidad, lo que nos permite aportar al conocimiento del ejercicio de la profesión durante este período.
