El mercantilismo

Abstract

Aun cuando, por lo general, los libros de texto de Economía Internacional no tratan el tema del mercantilismo, dejándolo para los textos de Historia del Pensamiento Económico, nosotros pensamos que el estudio de dicha escuela es de particular interés en un curso de Teoría Pura del Comercio Internacional, no sólo por el largo periodo de tiempo que dicha escuela cubre, sino también porque ha sido la única escuela económica cuyos argumentos centrales giran alrededor del comercio internacional y de la política comercial. En este breve ensayo se busca enfatizar la complejidad del mercantilismo, viéndolo no solo como una escuela económica ¾con una doctrina comercial y otra monetaria¾, sino también como una escuela política, y para ello recurrimos a autores como Eli Heckscher, J. M. Keynes y Joseph Schumpeter.

Although, as a general rule, textbooks of International Economics do not deal with the theme of mercantilism, leaving it for the texts of History of Economic Analysis, we think that it is important to study such school in a course of Pure Theory of International Trade, not only because of the long period of time it covers, but also because it has been the only economic school whose main arguments are related to international trade and policy. In this short essay we try to emphasize the complexity of mercantilism, treating it not only as an economic school ¾with both commercial and monetary doctrines¾, but also as a political system, and to do that we resort to authors such as Eli Heckscher, J.M. Keynes, and Joseph Schumpeter.
