Las nuevas iglesias en una parroquia de inmigrantes de la Gran Lima

Abstract

I gather in this article a small part of a forthcoming book on the religious paths of Lima immigrants in the Virgen de Nazaret parish, which covers more than half of the population of the El Agustino district. When immigrants arrive in Lima, many adapt to the new religious situation by going more or less regularly to Catholic temples, but many others experience a certain religious transformation through three paths: some reproduce the peasant religion in the city, especially with the "recreation" of the patron saint festivals, others join "base communities" of the parish, to better understand the bible and seek greater commitment to social change, and others end up enrolling in one of the sects or new churches , which are proliferating in recent years in the young towns of the great Lima. This article is limited to analyzing the third way, for which I will deal successively with the growth of the new churches, the reasons why immigrants convert and the sociopolitical dimension of the new churches.

Recojo en este artículo una pequeña parte de un libro de próxima aparición sobre los caminos religiosos de los inmigrantes limeños en la parroquia Virgen de Nazaret, que abarca más de la mitad de la población del distrito de El Agustino. Cuando los inmigrantes llegan a Lima, muchos se adaptan a la nueva situación religiosa acudiendo con más o menos regularidad a los templos católicos, pero otros muchos experimentan una cierta transformación religiosa a través de tres caminos: unos reproducen la religión campesina en la ciudad, especialmente con la "recreación" de las fiestas patronales, otros se integran en "comunidades de base" de la parroquia, para conocer mejor la biblia y buscar un mayor compromiso con el cambio social y otros terminan por enrolarse en alguna de las sectas o nuevas iglesias, que están proliferando en los últimos años en los pueblos jóvenes de la Gran Lima. Este artículo se limita a analizar el tercer camino, para lo cual trataré sucesivamente del crecimiento de las nuevas iglesias, de las razones por las que los inmigrantes se convierten y de la dimensión sociopolítica de las nuevas iglesias.
