Entre el empirismo y la teleología en antropología social

Abstract

An arduous task for the anthropologist as an ethnographer, responsible for carrying out field work, is to delimit (establish limits) and configure (give shape to what doesn’t usually have it), the abundant information that may eventually be accessed. A serious problem is finding the rationality of social processes, that is, finding the causal or concomitance relationships between the heteroclitic factors or variables that make up social processes, which are always historical. Extreme empiricism is an epistemological error, as is what is called teleology. Nominalism as an epistemological strategy and what it implies can be the way to bridge the extremes. The present text, following the brief intellectual biography of a wise man, a character of Borges, offers, helped by some fundamental theorists of the social sciences, some clues that guide to a good conclusion.

Labor ardua para el antropólogo como etnógrafo, responsable de ejecutar trabajo de campo, es delimitar (establecer límites) y configurar (dar forma a lo que no suele tenerla) la abundante información a la que eventualmente accede. Problema serio es hallar la racionalidad de los procesos sociales, es decir, hallar las relaciones causales o de concomitancia entre los heteróclitos factores o variables que configuran los procesos sociales, que siempre son históricos. El empirismo extremo es un error epistemológico, como también lo es aquello a lo que se denomina teleología. El nominalismo como estrategia epistemológica y aquello que implica, puede ser la vía para salvar los extremos. El presente texto, siguiendo la breve biografía intelectual de un savant, un personaje de Borges, ofrece, ayudado por algunos teóricos fundamentales de las ciencias sociales, algunas pistas que guían a un buen término.
