La memoria de la guerra del Pacífico en Lima y en “las provincias cautivas” (1884-1929): Entre el revanchismo y el heroísmo patriótico

Abstract

This study analyzes in a comparative way how the memory following the War of the Pacific was shaped in Lima and the provinces of Tacna and Arica, the “captive provinces,” between the years 1884 and 1929, thus encompassing the postwar time up to the signing of the Treaty of Lima (June 3, 1929), which resolved the outstanding issues between Peru and Chile. It explores the construction of national memory promoted from Lima and the memory of captivity in Tacna and Arica. Likewise, it offers a reflection on the relationship between memory and nationalism, as well as on the cultural manifestations associated with it.

Este estudio analiza comparativamente cómo se forjó la memoria sobre la guerra del Pacífico en Lima y en las provincias de Tacna y Arica, las “provincias cautivas”, entre 1884 y 1929, de modo que se abarca el periodo de la posguerra hasta la firma del Tratado de Lima (3 de junio de 1929), que puso fin a los asuntos pendientes entre el Perú y Chile. Se explora la construcción de la memoria nacional promovida desde Lima y la memoria del cautiverio en Tacna y Arica, y se re-flexiona sobre la relación de la memoria con el nacionalismo y las manifestaciones culturales asociadas a este.
