Estas líneas quieren aportar elementos sobre la presencia inca, si no en el Chaco mismo, al menos en su orilla occidental -la llamada «cordillera chiriguana» en Bolivia-. La investigación arqueológica es todavía incipiente en esta zona, y los datos provienen fundamentalmente de fuentes escritas coloniales. La más célebre de ellas, la «relación cierta» de Diego Felipe de Alcaya, fue también, paradójicamente, la menos creíble a los ojos de los historiadores. Sobre la base de otros documentos coloniales e incluso algunos testimonios indígenas actuales, estas páginas quieren demostrar la veracidad de esta relación en lo que toca particularmente a la mina de Saypurú en el piedemonte andino.
