This review article covers the present knowledge on the chemistry and biological activities of Smallanthus sonchifolius (Poepp.) H. Rob. A description of the chemical compounds reported in the scientific literature (i.e. oligofructans, phenolic compounds and terpenes) is included. The biological activities of the crude extracts of leaves and roots from yacón are discussed.

Sodium dodecilbenzensulfonate, main tensoactive present in commercial detergents, was selected as model molecule to study degradation of domestic and industrial laundry wastewater samples by advanced oxidative processes using H2O2/ TiO 2/UV system in fluidized bed reactor. Catalyst was studied by X-Ray; main chemical parameters measured were ionic pair methylene blue - LAS, DQO, dissolved C02 ; CI, SO4 -2, CO3 2; N03, Fe3 + and bioassays with Daphnia magna.

The search for microchannel wall modifications of simple use, that provide the desired functionality while the nonspecific adsorption is reduced to a mínimum, has allowed the development of new wall coatings. Specifically, the study of modifications that will enable to create robust microfluidic devices for the direct analysis of complex samples in which no sample pretreatment is required, are becoming a very important field of research, since they will allow microfluidic devices to become the analytical tool of choice for pharmaceutical and bioanalytical research fields.

This contribution presents a general review of the chemistry of polyesters. The different alternatives for the production of polyesters with different properties are presented and analyzed. In this respect, the characteristics related to their industrial use are highlighted, as well as their applications. Due to the importance of poly(ethylene terephthalate) in our modern society and its massive use, the most common alternatives for its chemical recycling are detailed. Special attention is given to the depolymerization of poly(ethylene terephthalate), including examples of the work developed by the authors.
