This paper addresses «El problema argentino de la lengua», an article published by Amado Alonso in 1932. To this end, we first analyze the type of theoretical and critical intervention that the author carries out; then, we consider it within a broader textual series that comprises a set of texts published between 1927, as Alonso becomes chair of the Institute of Philology of the University of Buenos Aires, and 1935, when he publishes the book El problema de la lengua en America, which includes a highly modified version of his 1932 work. We conclude that this article is an exceptional text in Alonso’s linguistic production as a whole, and that this exceptionality can be interpreted as a sign of the process of theoretical reformulation that he underwent during the period.

Esquemas de formación de palabras en solidaridad
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2022-06-30) Ponce de León, Ramón F. Zacarías
Word formation in Spanish, mainly by affixation, shows a mostly concatenative behavior in which the relationships of form and meaning are established linearly. However, there are many cases that cannot be described based on the recurrent attachment of affixes. These formations have long been identified, but they have not been studied in detail, since the type of analysis that prevails in approaches to the lexical morphology of Spanish cannot fully account for morphological relationships of this type. One of these non-concatenative correspondences is the one established between pairs of suffixes that correlate at the level of meaning but not at a formal level, such is the case of the suffixes -ismo and -ista (comunismo, comunista), probably the best-known case of this type of derivation. In this research we will analyze this type of word-formation scheme starting from the concept of solidarity, proposed by Beniers (1996). We will study four productive solidarity schemes from Mexican Spanish, all of them suffixal. In addition to the afore mentioned -ismo, -ista, we will analyze -ero, -ería; -nte, -ncia and -azo, -iza. As we will see, the solidarity scheme allows us to describe in detail the relationships that are stablished between each of these pairs of suffixes. In this paper we will first present the concept of solidarity, its background and the previous work that has been done based on this kind of analysis. Next, we will analyze each of these solidarities to establish their characteristics and constraints. Finally, we conclude that this type of analysis allows a more accurate and appropriate description of such non-concatenative word-formation schemes.

When studying elocutio in Poema, a poetry piece by Carlos Germán Belli, expressed in numerous linguistic écarts so peculiar that many have signaled its ‘strange condition’, it can be found a spiritual etymology associated with Classical philosophical tradition in expression as well as in content, and also in all linguistic dimensions. Such a link reveals the poem as a consummated totality, in which an absolute correspondence exists between linguistic expression and metaphysical sense.

This article analyzes the manuscript ANC1-960-T-1219, which contains the Spanish translation of two works by Sallust: The Conspiracy of Catiline and The Jugurthine War. In our research we have determined that the text of the testimony corresponds to a mid-fifteenth century translation by Francisco Vidal de Noya, a person close to the Aragonese court and mentor of King Ferdinand the Catholic. In this study we analyze the manuscript from a graphic, morphosyntactic and lexical point of view, which allows us to investigate the possible linguistic influence of the peninsular east in this historiographic text in Spanish. Furthermore, we will compare some of the analyzed phenomena with the text from the first edition of the translation, printed in Zaragoza in 1493, in order to observe the possible linguistic variants between the manuscript and the printed version.

The amor hereos or aegritudo amoris was a type of medieval melancholy triggered by love rejection. It was caused by women but suffered by men, and it used to show a demonic kind of femininity. Many people would say this erotic conception disappeared, but there is enough evidence to believe don Juan’s tradition could be a different face of the same sort of love. According to this idea, the sinful behavior of don Juan would be a reproduction of the feminine eroticism exposed in the tradition of Spanish amatory treatises. Namely, it would have evolved from being a masculine melancholic disease to being a female one.

In 1911, Eloy Fariña Núñez published in Buenos Aires the long poem Canto secular to commemorate the centenary of Paraguay’s independence. The work displays a modernist stamp, but it also involves some features of Arielism, a Latin American political philosophy that brought youth to the fore and recognized a double American and Greco-Latin cultural ancestry. This article proposes an intertextual and interdiscursive approach to Canto secular, in order to discover in the poem a literary operation of foundation of an enunciative locus where two spatiotemporal coordinates, both literary recreated, overlap: the peasant Paraguay in the transition towards urbanity, and classical antiquity synthesized in some legal values and models.

This article presents a new approach to the (re)ordering of SUBJECT and OBJECT morphemes in verb agreement of Ayacuchan Quechua. Our analysis is based on Distributed Morphology (Halle and Marantz 1993), which proposes operations on morphemes in the morphological component. We conclude that the addressee feature of the second-person OBJECT morpheme –nki «wins» when it comes to specificity and, therefore, it appears in a SUBJECT position, which results in the occurrence of –yki as an allomorph and the appearance of –su. Finally, we propose the occurrence of –su as a transitional defective morpheme, which cannot be considered as a third or second person pronoun.

This paper is a first detailed study of the ethnozoological nomenclature in Urarina, an Amazonian isolate language spoken in Loreto, Peru. Based on a corpus of more than 250 lexical items gathered through fieldwork, we describe and analyze the main linguistic strategies used in the formation of Urarina animal names. As a result, eight naming strategies are proposed for Urarina animal nomenclature, and the relationship between these strategies and the formation of simple and complex lexemes is discussed. The paper contributes not only to the documentation and description of an Amazonian isolate, but also to the comparison, both typological and areal, with other languages of the region.
