Nowadays, nutrition is not only based on what we cook, but also in what we take as supplements. Many products have invaded us: vitamins, aminoacids, vegetal extracts, omega-3, etc.  In this work we explain some important concepts such as nutraceuticals, functional and fortified foods, and also the way these products are made.

The 2012 Ig Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Johan Petterson, a Swedish engineer who discovered that copper was responsible for turning hair green in a little Swedish town. Many green copper compounds used as pigments are present in nature and there are also the hemocyanins, copper-containing proteins found in the blood of some arthropods and mollusks.

A research group at the Israel Institute of Technology has outlined the use of Fe2O3 photoanodes to enhance the efficiency of photoelectrochemical cells. The improvement is based on the design of extremely thinsheets of Fe2O3, which allow for a more efficient transport of charge carriers, reducing the amount of them that are lost due to recombination. Fe2O3 was chosen as a photoanode material due to its high stability in water, its high light absorption efficiency, the fact that it is non toxic and its low cost. Photoelectrochemical cells are extremely important in order to electrolyse water, hence producing hydrogen,a green fuel.

Chitin is an abundant biopolymer that can be found in shells of crustaceans, insects and in squid and pota pen. Deacetylation of chitin produces chitosan, a more versatile polysaccharide due to its solubility and increased chemical reactivity. Chitosan is used in medicine, pharmaceutics, cosmetics, water treatment, agriculture and food industry.

On the occasion of the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of Robert Wilhelm Bunsen (1811-1899) in 2011, we have prepared a historical study of all instruments or devices this German chemist used, and the improvements he introduced in them. The main aim of our study has a teaching purpose: helping Chemistry students (either High School or first-year college students) get involved with this subject. Hence, our work has two different parts: firstly, the historical study of the equipment and, secondly, its didactic application.
