      Professor Tom Yuan and his team were awarded the Ig-Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2015 for creating a recipe to “unboil” an egg. Although it may seem unimportant, this work has crucial importance, as it offers the possibility of refolding denatured proteins and getting them back to its natural state. This research might have an impact on industry, as it could prevent the loss of billions of dollars.

      Formación de Enlaces Carbono-Nitrógeno Catalizada por Metales de Transición

      Carbon-nitrogen (C–N) bond forming reactions are fundamental transformations in nature and also basic processes for the preparation of molecules and materials relevant to human activities. The development of new and efficient reactions for the formation of C–N bonds are therefore of great interest in academic and industrial settings. Progress in the last 20 years has focused mainly in Csp2–N bond forming processes; however, there is growing range of transition metal catalyzed reactions for the introduction of nitrogen in alkyl frameworks (Csp3–N bond formation). This article describes a selection of modern catalytic methods for the formation of C–N bonds.

      2015: triunfos inéditos de la OPQ en tierras lejanas

      2015, a year in which we commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Peruvian Chemistry Olym­piad (OPQ), has been a very successful year for our Olympic team in the international Chemis­try events in which Peru has participated. Three medals were obtained in the International Chem­istry Olympiad (IChO) and four were awarded to our team at the Iberoamerican Chemistry Olym­piad (OIAQ). Moreover, in the latter a student from our delegation had the best final score. Our national competition, the Peruvian Chemistry Olympiad (OPQ), had a great success with regard to student participation (more than two thousand students registered nationwide) making it an un­missable event among secondary school students interested in Chemistry.

      Iron is a fundamental element for life, being essential in vital processes such as oxygen transport, electron transfer, enzymatic reactions, aerobic metabolism, photosynthesis or nitrogen fixation. Given the relevance of this element in metabolic routes central to life development, it is unsurprising that a great number of pathologies are linked to iron metabolism problems. Iron pathological species that appear in the frame of some diseases are nanometric materials, whose characterization presents huge difficulties. Detailed knowledge of these species may have great relevance in different problems such as the improvement of malaria diagnostic techniques or the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
