Conocimiento sobre hábitos de succión en pediatras y odontólogos de Lima metropolitana

Resumen
El presente trabajo, de tipo descriptivo y comparativo, tiene como
objetivo investigar en profesionales del área de salud (pediatras y odontólogos) los
conocimientos que poseen sobre hábitos de succión, tomando como aspectos el
concepto de la succión, sus beneficios, consecuencias y efectos de los hábitos
prolongados de succión e intervención para el retiro de estos hábitos.
Se tomó como población a 62 médicos pediatras y 53 odontólogos
que laboran en Lima Metropolitana. La muestra fue intencional. Como
instrumento fundamental se elaboró un cuestionario de alternativas múltiples
conteniendo 15 ítems, el mismo que fue validado por cinco jueces, todos ellos
expertos en motricidad orofacial. Los datos obtenidos permitieron concluir que no existe mayor diferencia
entre el conocimiento que poseen los pediatras y los odontólogos de Lima
Metropolitana en relación a los hábitos de succión. Además, el 79% de los pediatras y el 68% de los odontólogos sospecharían de la existencia de algún
hábito prolongado de succión al observar la presencia de ciertas características en
sus pacientes, sin embargo sólo el 60% de los pediatras y el 57% de odontólogos
reconocen los efectos que podrían ocasionar los hábitos prolongados. Se notó
también que un buen porcentaje (34 % de pediatras y el 41% de los odontólogos)
no relacionan los problemas articulatorios del habla con los hábitos prolongados
de succión. Finalmente, se comprobó que existe insuficiente información en los
profesionales entrevistados (31% de pediatras y 34% de odontólogos) para
orientar adecuadamente el tratamiento a seguir para el retiro del hábito, o para
recomendar especialistas a quienes acudir en caso de presentarse en sus consultas

The present research is comparative and descriptive. The aim of this study is to investigate in some health professionals (pediatricians and dentists) the knowledge they have about sucking habits, considering the following aspects: sucking concept, benefits, consequences and effects of prolonged sucking habits,as well as treatment. In this study participated 62 pediatricians and 53 dentists that work in Lima city. The sample was intentional. As main instrument a multiple choice questionnaire was designed containing 15 items. This questionnaire was validated by five judges, each one expert in oral motricity. The obtained data allowed concluding that there is no significant difference between the knowledge pediatricians and dentists in Lima city have about sucking habits. Besides that 79% of pediatricians and 68% of dentists would suspect of the existence of any prolonged sucking habit if they observed certain characteristics in their patients; however, only 60% of pediatricians and 57% of dentists recognize the effects that prolonged sucking habits could cause.
