This research focuses on analyzing the metaphors related to school management used by principals of private schools belonging to a religious congregation. For this purpose, four principals were interviewed, who, from their wide experience, were able to give an account of the reality of the management of their schools and reflect on their own practices. The study used a qualitative methodology, i.e., it valued, at all times, the way in which each principal perceived and gave meanings to school management through their metaphors. For the collection and analysis of the information, three phases corresponding to the methodology were respected: the first, focused on the identification and extraction of the findings and metaphorical expressions of the principals; the second, focused on the characterization of each metaphorical expression according to its orientation in relation to the aspects of school management (cultural aspect, pedagogical aspect, political aspect and practical aspect); and, the last, corresponding to the analysis of the most significant metaphors in relation to what was exposed in the conceptual framework. Finally, 87 metaphorical expressions and 29 conceptual metaphors were identified, each one linked to an aspect of school management, the tendencies being those directly related to the political and pedagogical aspect. This allows us to demonstrate that, thanks to the identification, characterization and analysis of the metaphors used by principals, it is possible to understand the reality of school management and how they interpret it and guide their work.
