The following research’s main objective is to explore the conceptions of mental illness in family members of female in-patients in a psychiatric hospital in Lima. This is an exploratory study that uses a qualitative methodology. To achieve the study objectives, seven family members were selected for interviews. In order to participate, subjects needed to fulfill two principal requirements: have a blood relationship with a psychiatric patient (who had been at least hospitalized for two weeks by the time of the interview and diagnosed with a mental disease) and have regularly cohabitated with the patient. A semi-structured interview process enabled participants to talk about their experiences and beliefs regarding their relative’s mental illness. Furthermore, it allowed them to acknowledge how their conception of the mental illness affected their relationship with their interned relative. The findings show that family members conceive mental illness as a complex phenomenon with negative implications. The interview process additionally uncovered the relatives’ understanding of the causes of mental illness; their own difficult experience of dealing with said illness and the personal and family consequences that these create. Moreover, the results denote the internal and external factors that interfere in the family member’s relationship with the patients.
