Abstract
The objective of this research was to examine the relationship between the critical success factors that compose the project implementation profile (PIP) and the criteria for evaluating whether a project was successful from a multidimensional perspective, and the degree to which the relationships vary when moderated by project manager competencies including transformational leadership style, knowledge supported by a professional certification in project management, and experience. The research was done in the Information Technology (IT) sector, and data were obtained through surveys directed to individuals who played the role of project managers in their organizations. The data collected were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results show that the critical success factors that explain the project success criteria are: client acceptance, project mission, project personnel, and trouble-shooting ability. Also, it was found that: experience does not influence project success, but its inclusion moderates the critical factors client consultation and trouble-shooting. On the other hand, a certified project manager does not necessarily influence project success, but the certification moderates the critical factors project mission and client consultation; and despite the significance of transformational leadership style for project success, it only moderates the critical factors monitoring and feedback and project personnel, showing that it is necessary to combine various leadership styles during the development of the project. These results have theoretical and practical implications, and support the importance of identifying the critical success factors that influence project success.
