In Peru, worrying levels of bullying and academic achievement have been reported, especially when compared with other countries (MINSA, 2011; MINEDU, 2012). Psychological research supports that an associated factor to both variables is teacher’s autonomy support towards students (Konishi, Hymel, Zumbo, & Li, 2010). According to Self-Determination Theory, this current study aims to analyze the association between teacher’s autonomy support perception and academic achievement on two groups: high and low level of students’ bullying perception in the classroom. It also sought to find differences among sex and parents’ educational level (EL). The sample is constituted by 217 middle school adolescents who were registered in three public schools at San Juan de Lurigancho. The study revealed significant correlations between autonomy support and academic achievement, which are higher under the low bullying perception condition (rs (141) = .28, p < .01) rather than the high bullying perception (rs (76) = .23, p < .05). Additionally, significant correlations were found for global (X2 = 10.65, p < .01) and low (X2 = 8.38, p < .05) bullying perception according to father’s EL; and academic achievement according to mother’s EL (X2 = 8.83, p < .01) and father’s EL (X2 = 11.01, p < .01). Recommendations include teacher training on strategies to promote autonomy in students and include parents as relevant actors for bullying prevention programs.
