Kant y el rol de la sensibilidad humana en el bienestar animal

Abstract

This paper attempts to show that, according to Kant, though we human beings have only indirect duties towards non-human animals, this is enough to ground a strong defense of their welfare and protection as sentient beings. To this end, the paper addresses Kant’s analogy between animal nature and human nature. It also shows how human sensibility —through the feelings of compassion and sympathy— is essential for the fulfillment of our indirect duty of safeguarding animal welfare.Este artículo busca demostrar que, para Kant, aun cuando los humanos solo tenemos deberes indirectos en relación con los animales no humanos, esto basta para fundar una sólida defensa de su bienestar y cuidado como seres sintientes. Para ello, abordaremos la analogía que Kant establece entre la naturaleza animal y la naturaleza humana, y veremos cómo la sensibilidad humana —mediante los sentimientos de compasión y simpatía— es fundamental al momento de cumplir con nuestro deber indirecto de velar por el bienestar animal.
