This research is focused on the systematization of a dance workshop experience. This workshop combined tools and methodologies from contemporary dance and somatic education with an urban dance style that derives from hip hop and is known as “sexy style”. As it occurs with many urban dance styles in the music industry, “sexy style” can be seen as a dance style that reproduces the objectification of women, which harms their dignity. Among other reasons, this prejudice arises from the type of dance moves, which emphasize women’s sensuality. In contrast to this opinion, this thesis seeks to explain and argue how this dance style can help women be supportive to each other, get in touch with their feelings and feel empowered. This research has been conducted based on interviews with women who have taken these dance classes, colleagues and teachers of contemporary dance, urban dance and somatics. Said interviews have been corroborated using a bibliographical review and considering the author’s own reflection, as she plays the role of both researcher and teacher of the aforementioned dance workshop. In addition, photographs were taken throughout the workshop and inserted into this text
