SELF-EFFICACY AND GOAL ORIENTATION IN PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYERS ABSTRACT The main purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and goal orientation (task and ego) in a sample of professional soccer players. In order to do this, two instruments were applied in a sample of 50 footballers from three professional football clubs, whose ages range between 19 and 35: the General Self-Efficacy Scale from Schwarzer (EAG) and the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ). The findings indicated that there is not significant relationship between these constructs, suggesting that they operate independently. However, by partial correlation, controlling the factor age, it was found a positive and small correlation (r=.26) between self-efficacy and task orientation. In addition, it was found significant relationships between self-efficacy and time in the club, and ego orientation and economic satisfaction. KEY WORDS Self-efficacy, goal orientation, professional football players.
