This research sets out to know the relationship between Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) and coping styles and strategies in a group of patients with gastrointestinal cancer. The sample was compounded by 38 patients, between 31 and 70 years old (M=56.16, DS=10.60) from three hospitals in Lima. To achieve this, The Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36) version by Alonso, Prieto y Antó (1995) and the COPE inventory (Carver, Scheier & Weintraub, 1989) were used. Significant and inverse relationships between mental health dimension with avoidant style and behavioral disengagement strategy was found. Regarding the dimensions of quality of life, mental health and general health were associated with planning and turn to religion strategies. Most participants show medium and high levels of HRQOL dimensions, which indicates that the quality of life is preserved, except for physical role and physical component. Additionally, regarding to coping, it was observed that the sample makes greater use of emotion-focused style and turn to religion strategy. Finally, there was significant differences in HRQOL according to a history of disease and coping with variables of sex, marital status and education level.
