Abstract
The Missions Area of the University Pastoral Advisory Center of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (CAPU-PUCP) develops social outreach actions and youth volunteerism by training young people with strong social sensitivity and aiding families in extreme poverty. The main objective of this research is to identify and analyze how the management of the Missions Area has contributed to the improvement of the quality of life of families in three family groups of four common pots, a type of community kitchen, in San Juan de Lurigancho district; and to the sensitization of young university missionaries. The research utilizes a mixed design, applying surveys and semi-structured interviews to the intervention actors, as well as participant observations of academic support activities for children and the implementation of gardens at home. The central findings of the research are the contribution of the Missions Area to the development of social sensitivity and leadership in university students; the complementary support in the education of children and adolescents and the food security of families during and after the COVID-19 pandemic; the initial development of learning related to entrepreneurship, connection with nature, and leadership in mothers; and the strengthening of trust and solidarity among family groups. Guidelines are proposed for the implementation and promotion of volunteer programs with a transformational and social management approach, considering the potential of these programs to promote citizenship building and the country’s development.
