This research was aimed to describe the relationship between Sense of Coherence and the Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy in a sample of 98 people with HIV and AIDS. The nonrandom sample consisted of 49 men and 49 women receiving care in a Welfare Institution of Lima, aged between 20 and 66 years. The instruments used were the Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC) and the Questionnaire for the Assessment of Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy in HIV-infected persons AIDS (HIV CEAT). The results revealed a median and significant relationship between Sense of Coherence and the Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy (r = .43, p = .01) as well as a significant medium correlation (r = .37, p = .01) between components of Comprehensibility and Compliance; similarly medium and significant correlation (r = .37, p = .01) between the components of Meaningfulness and Modulators Factors, and a small, significant correlation (r = .25, p = .05) between the components of Manageability and Modulators Factors. Furthermore, it was also found that people who had a higher level of instruction showed higher levels of SOC compared to those with Basic Instruction; also those who reported Undetectable Viral Load levels showed higher levels of adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy. In conclusion, there is a moderate relationship between SOC and Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy which means that higher levels of SOC imply higher levels of Adherence to Treatment.
