Changes in the subsistence strategy of prehistoric intertidal gathering : the Pre-ceramic and Ceramic coastal hunter-gatherers of Reloncaví Sound, Chile

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to review the entire stratigraphic sequence of shellfish fauna! remains from five shell middens located on the Reloncaví Sound and dated from 5576 to 1825 cal. B.P. (Figure 4.1). Changes in the abundance and diversity of fauna! assemblages through time suggest a transformation of the subsistence strategies and settlement patterns in this area. Among these transformations, the marked increase of species diversity in t he upper levels containing pottery suggests a shift to a subsistence strategy based on more intense fauna! exploitation. The optima! foraging model of diet breadth is used to understand this change. By applying this model to the archaeomalacological data, we interpret the temporal variation in the array of resources consumed as linked t o changes in land use, subsistence strategies and settlement patterns.El propósito de este artículo es revisar la secuencia estratigráfica de los restos malacológicos de los cinco conchales ubicados en el seno de Reloncaví y fechados desde 5576 hasta 1825 años cal. a.p. (Figura 4.1). Los cambios en la abundancia y la diversidad de las muestras de fauna a través del tiempo sugieren una transformación de las estrategias de subsistencia y de los patrones de asentamiento en esta área. Entre las transformaciones, el marcado aumento en la diversidad de especies en los niveles superiores con contenido cerámico sugiere un cambio hacia una estrategia de subsistencia basada en una explotación más intensiva de la fauna. Para entender este cambio, se utiliza el modelo de amplitud de dieta de la teoría de Forajeo Óptimo. Al aplicar este modelo a los datos arqueomalacológicos, interpretamos que la variación temporal en la gama de recursos consumidos está vinculada a cambios en las estrategias de subsistencia y patrones de asentamiento.
