This research aims to explore the experiences of young men of Lima along the process of accepting and developing their homosexual identity. For this purpose we interviewed seven homosexual men aged 20 and 24, belonging to a medium-high socioeconomic sector. Participants were assessed using a profound interview, designed specifically for the purposes of this investigation, based on the homosexual identity development models proposed in the revised literature. Based on the obtained results, four processes that underlie the identity development were identified: discovery, questioning, acceptance and integration. The acceptance process is closely linked and influenced by the subject support’s quality, and the characteristics of their family, social and cultural environment. In this case, the social environment of the participants was generally described as homophobic or intolerant to the needs of the gay community. The importance of having and adequate support network during the development has been highlighted because it will favor a more bearable process. On the contrary, without adequate support adolescents may present a greater extent of emotional difficulties like suicide ideations, episodes of depression, bullying and loneliness.
