The current research tries to explore the social representations about sexual diversity of a group of university students currently studying the first years of their career. An exploratory qualitative research was conducted using focus groups. The results realize that there is an unknowledge among participants about the topic, which is being reflected in an ambiguous and imprecise discourse and in a social representation under construction based mainly on stereotypes and prejudges. This vision makes participants have a negative assessment and attitudes, and discriminatory behavior towards people of sexual diversity. It’s important to reflex how people relationships and experiences are affected by these representations, as well as their mental health. In the representational field of the interviewed it’s clear that getting support of the family, friends and the environment as a factor that helps people of sexual diversity to accept their sexual identity and improve facing hostile reactions. Opinions of apparent tolerance appear when this relation is approached; nevertheless, the rejection that exists towards this population is evidenced by jokes and mocking. They identify education as a central factor that can favor greater acceptance and place the university as a place where there is greater openness towards sexual diversity. It is important to work on the subject in the university because it is recognized as a place with greater knowledge and a greater probability of meeting with these people, where can also train future professionals sensitized who will be able to be more inclusive.
