Se ha difundido mucho el término interculturalidad, sin embargo, existe cierta confusión sobre su sentido preciso. Entre quienes buscan reconocimiento para su cultura, subordinada y despreciada a lo largo de siglos, algunos consideran que el término se introdujo como parte de una política destinada a integrar las culturas subordinadas a la cultura hegemónica por medio de la asimilación. La interculturalidad aparece entonces como una amenaza vinculada directamente a políticas de Estado o de organismos internacionales, que buscarían por ese medio apaciguar los movimientos étnicos en América Latina. Para otros, al contrario, la interculturalidad es utilizada como sinónimo de identidad cultural. Coincidiría entonces con la idea de que es necesario reforzar, reivindicar y revalorar las culturas ancestrales.
