Al igual que en muchas ciudades coloniales americanas, en Santa Fe se conformó un grupo de poder cuya denominación común fue el control de los recursos y el manejo de la política local. En esta pequeña sociedad, los más acaudalados los más prestigiosos formaron un grupo que estableció lazos de solidaridad entre sus miembros quienes siguieron una conducta previsible frente a un mercado matrimonial restringido. Las asociaciones y redes parentales, más la superposición de rango y riqueza que se dieron entre las principales familias, permite hablar de una elite unificada, de un grupo pequeño y abierto apoyado simultáneamente en la tierra, el comercio y la administración.
