En este ensayo se intentarán describir algunos aspectos de (1) la historia del arte y (2) los estudios visuales, estableciendo algunas diferencias que podrían sugerir que la historia del arte se ha quedado rezagada debido a su encasillamiento disciplinario, mientras que los estudios visuales expanden su campo, traspasan los límites, convirtiéndose en estudios de carácter interdisciplinar. En un tercer apartado concluyente, se sostiene que la interdisciplinariedad es una salida fehaciente a la crisis que atraviesan algunos departamentos en las universidades en la actualidad, dado que permite el trabajo de una comunidad académica que busca incidir en la realidad compleja.
