Más allá de cuál sea el propósito último del pensamiento platónico metafísico, ético-político, epistemológico, uno de sus rasgos esenciales es sin duda la impronta examinadora que lo caracteriza. Desde esta perspectiva, es posible considerar que la mayor parte de los diálogos constituyen precisamente «modelos de indagación filosófica» (Gioia, 2004, pp.131-136). El filósofo, en efecto, aparece como el que puede dar razón de su saber, tal como Sócrates lo afirma, por ejemplo, en Fedón 75b5-7. En este sentido le es propio a la filosofía la búsqueda de una explicación fundada.
