Este capítulo demuestra cómo la reciente emigración venezolana debe entenderse como una «migración de supervivencia». En este sentido, se analiza cómo la masiva migración venezolana se explica por la actual crisis socioeconómica y política en la cual viven a diario los venezolanos, crisis que se refleja en una total desprotección y en la privación de sus derechos humanos (educación, trabajo, salud, seguridad alimentaria, entre otros). Se argumenta que, si bien estamos frente a un conjunto de crisis y colapsos interconectados que explican la salida del país de millones de personas, la inseguridad alimentaria es un elemento central, ya que tiene efectos múltiples en sus vidas y en el funcionamiento general del país. Para ello, se analiza las trayectorias migratorias de veinte jóvenes venezolanos que han llegado al Perú en los últimos tres años. Después de reflexionar sobre las migraciones a causa de las crisis, se utiliza fragmentos de las historias de vida de estos jóvenes para ilustrar cómo han presenciado la crisis en su país en los ámbitos de la alimentación, la salud, la educación, el empleo, así como para analizar la crisis de autoridades en el país, y por qué la migración llegó a imponerse como la única manera de seguir viviendo. Finalmente, se discute la relación entre la situación de supervivencia de estos jóvenes migrantes y su acceso (o no) a derechos.
