Abstract
El siglo XIX es el momento crucial para la formación de la nación peruana. Esta
buscaba ser, en principio, moderna. Por tanto, “ingresar a la modernidad fue un objetivo
central para las autoridades y élites peruanas” (Zegarra 2007: 499). Según Zegarra, “Las
características de la modernidad habían sido definidas por el pensamiento de la
Ilustración que acompañó el auge de la burguesía en la sociedad occidental” (2007:
499). Así, en este momento, se tiene como centro al individuo y el fin principal de la
sociedad se convierte en alcanzar el progreso para lo cual son necesarios el ejercicio de
la razón, independizarse de los postulados de la Iglesia y experimentar científicamente
(Zegarra 2007: 499). Lo importante en este contexto es formar al ciudadano ilustrado
“con buenas costumbres y capaz de controlar sus emociones” (Zegarra 2007: 499).
