Experimental research of extended polarization coherence theorem for nonclassical light
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2023-06-26) Jara Ortiz, Max; De Zela Martinez, Francisco Antonio
This thesis reports the experimental display of an extension of the polarization coherence theorem (PCT), a theorem that established a constraint between distinguishability and visibility, two quantities that serve, respectively, as a measure of particle-like and wave-like behavior that may simultaneously appear in interferometric arrangements. While the PCT applies in both quantum and classical regimes, this thesis focuses on the quantum case. The experiments were conducted using single photons. The theoretical extension of the PCT that was submitted to experimental test is much more involved than the original PCT and put several technical challenges. This thesis reports the successful implementation of the experiments. The techniques used could also be employed, with slight modifications, when working with classical light. The general framework, in which our results make a contribution, refers to so-called wave-particle duality and Bohr’s complementarity principle. This is a topic of intensive research that addresses not only foundational issues in quantum mechanics but also practical applications in quantum information science.

In this thesis, we address open quantum systems subjected to Markovian and non- Markovian evolutions. We diagnose these two regimes using the relative entropy of coherence. We specially address the case of two qubits encoded in the polarization degree of freedom of photon beams. The two qubits play the roles of system and ancilla. In our experimental setup, we need only two parameters to control Markovian and non-Markovian regimes. We also propose and provide a proof-of-concept for the implementation of a quantum gate that drives an open system so that it can reach maximal coherence. Our ndings also illustrate possibilities for generating non-Markovian processes, which are important to recover information that has gone from the system to its environment. We thereby show how non-Markovianity can be considered as a resource in open quantum systems.

Simulation of a non-Markovian evolution using coherence
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2019-06-12) Marrou Osores, Jean Paul; Zela Martínez, Francisco Antonio de
This thesis will be oriented in the study of open quantum systems. The transition of processes that go between the Markovian and non-Markovian regime will be studied. The diagnose of non-Markovianity will be made in terms of the variation of the coherence of the state. Accordingly, an optical setup will be implemented that allows us to manipulate certain degrees of freedom, like the polarization and the optical path. Theoretically, we have found that the coherence of the system is transferred to the environment and it decreases as we move a parameter that we will take as time. This situation has been confirmed in the experiment. Then, due to the second part of the setup, which produces a non-Markovian evolution by also changing one of its parameters, we have accomplished the goal of returning the information back into the system and to measure the non-Markovianity of the process.
