ECONOMÍA Journal was initially established as the “Revista Economía” of the Department of Economics of the Pontificia Universidad Católica of Peru (PUCP) in 1977. It is the oldest academic journal on economics in the country. Building on that legacy, ECONOMÍA has now been relaunched as an internationally refereed journal dedicated to publishing original academic research on economics in English, with an expanded and prestigious Editorial Board, as well as a large team of Associated Editors that guarantee the highest theoretical and methodological standards.

ECONOMÍA also offers a manuscript management platform that provides an eficient workflow among authors, associate editors and referees throughout the process of manuscript submission and evaluation. In this new stage, ECONOMÍA aspires to continue leading the progress of academic literature in the country as well as position itself in a prominent place in the Latin American region.

La Matriz de Capacidades y Desempeños (MCD) y el Algoritmo del Desarrollo Humano (ADH)
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Fondo Editorial, 2010) Gonzales de Olarte, Efraín
Given that human development is a complex process involving multiple components and determiningfactors, multidimensional indicators are needed. On the basis of the extensive literatureon the subject, we advance two new indicators: the Matrix of Capabilities and Functioning(MCF), and the Algorithm of Human Development (HDA).The MCF is composed of vectors of capabilities and functionings, based on Sen’s idea of RefinedFunctionings. It is based in a matricial framework, both static and dynamic. The main purposeof constructing this index is to study how different sets of capabilities relate to alternativefunctionings, to produce diverse outcomes. The Human Development Algorithm (HAD) is a multidimensional index concerning the setof goods and services needed to complete a life cycle. The HDA is a socio-economic contextindicator. It is composed of the main «satisfactors» or basic goods and services needed: food, health, education, housing, social security, decent employment and retirement programs, thatmight be available to all throughout of life cycle. This indicator shows the material progressreached by each country or region as well the institutional organization, private and public, andthe degree of social cohesion and solidarity.

Divergencia y convergencia regional en el Perú: 1978-1 992
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Fondo Editorial, 2004) Gonzales de Olarte, Efraín; Trelles Cassinelli, Jorge
This is a paper on the Regional Convergente Hypothesis, applied to the Peruvian caseduring the 1978-1992 period. The research considers an important element, generallyneglected by studies on economic growth: the spatial organization of the economy inregions. For that purpose, the empirical analysis has used spatial economic tools, applied to a panel data model with fixed effects and SAR (1) errors. The findings show the absence of trends towards conditional convergence, whichmeans that the Peruvian Departments as such lack steady growth paths in the mediumtem. The data also show that during #e hyperinflation and structural adjustment periods, the less developed Departments presented slow down factors. Finally, the analysicshows that the public expenditure plays an important compensatory role of thedecelerating and accelerating forces of growth, and that its impact is more favorable togrowth when regions are considered, instead of the Departments. These results reinforcethe idea that integration of the Departments into regions is necessary.
