In his research on art history, Georges Didi-Huberman takes images from distinct insects –butterflies, phasmidas, moths, flies etc.– to analyze visual objects and to assign them a value with respect to their image and historic position. In Survivance des lucioles (2009), the author takes the firefly as a symbol to reflect upon the power of several artistic manifestations with respect to their quality as images. In that sense, what is proposed is the idea that these insects survive as images (images survivantes) that –representing art, and metonymically humans– are bearers of an aesthetic and political resistance by emitting their dim lights (lucciole). Hereafter, the present paper (1) analyzes the definition of fireflies as images survivantes, as well as delves into how the author incorporates those images to the study of other insect-images such as butterflies or moths in previous studies; (2) examines the aesthetic and political value that Didi-Huberman confers to these firefly-images as cultural and divergent remains, in times of resistance; and, finally, (3) assesses Didi-Huberman’s position regarding the supposition that “fireflies have disappeared”, understanding this assumption as the disappearance of experience in its purest sense.

This paper deals with the hierarchical organization of the subject’s acts and their foundational ranking according to Husserl and Scheler, emphasizing emotional acts and their correlative objects –values. Husserl argues that cognitive (objectifying) acts (perception, thought-acts) found emotional acts (the evaluation or feeling of values), whereas Scheler holds that emotional acts found representations or objectifying acts. This difference refers back to key points in their own conceptions of the phenomenological method and the status of objective correlates.

In this article I investigate the ways in which phenomenology could guide our views on the rights and/or wrongs of abortion. To my knowledge, very few phenomenologists have directed their attention to this issue, although quite a few have strived to better understand and articulate the strongly related themes of pregnancy and birth, most often in the context of feminist philosophy. After introducing the ethical and political contemporary debate concerning abortion, I introduce phenomenology in the context of medicine, and the way phenomenologists have understood the human body as lived and experienced by its owner. I turn then to the issue of pregnancy and discuss how the embryo or foetus could appear for us, particularly from the perspective of the pregnant woman, and what such showing up would mean from an ethical perspective. The way medical technology has changed the experience of pregnancy –for the pregnant woman, as well as for the father and/or other close ones– is discussed, particularly the implementation of early obstetric ultra-sound screening and blood test (NIPT) for Down’s syndrome and other medical defects. I conclude the article by suggesting that phenomenology can help us to negotiate a higher time-limit for legal abortion and, also, provide ways to determine which embryo-foetus defects to look for, and in which cases these should be looked upon as good reasons for performing an abortion.

The purpose of this article is to crisscross Rahel Jaeggi’s proposal of an immanent critique of forms of life with Robert Brandom’s inferentialist theory. The process of rationalization of a community of speakers’ cultural and conceptual resources developed by Brandom is useful to understand forms of life as solving instances of second-order problems. To this end, I will explain Jaeggi’s notion of forms of life as solving instances of second-order problems, which I will complement with Brandom’s “expressive freedom”. Secondly, I will develop his inferentialist approach, which I will articulate with second-order problems in relation to the explanation of the inferential relations of concepts within a space of reasons. Finally, I will develop the argument in which the opening of a space of reasons may be understood as the place where one can find the germ of the critique that could lead to social transformation.

The aim of the present work is to show a study on the conception of the law in Francisco Suárez in the light of a transcendental logic and ethics proposed by Ludwig Wittgenstein with the purpose of offering a link between both positions regarding the nature and formulation of our laws and rules. First, I examine the Suarezian theory of intellection and science. Second, I examine the Wittgensteinian theory of logic and language games. Finally, I develop a comparison between the consideration of the law according to Suárez and ethics according to Wittgenstein as transcendental assessments that serve as analyses for our prescriptions and actions.
