Estimating and Explaining the Financial Performance of Property and Casualty Insurers: A Two-Stage Analysis
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. CENTRUM, 2012) Doumpos, Michael; Gaganis, Chrysovalantis; Pasiouras, Fotios
The purpose of this study is to estimate and explain the performance of non-life (i.e., property and casualty) insurers. The analysis consists of two stages. First, we propose the use of a multicriteria method to assess the condition of insurers while considering simultaneously a set of conflicting financial criteria. Then, we use regression analysis to examine the influence of firm-specific and country-specific attributes on the overall measure of performance obtained during the first stage. Macroeconomic conditions such as gross domestic product (GDP) growth, inflation, and income inequality are the most robust predictors of performance. However, other country-specific characteristics that relate to the institutional environment and financial or economic freedom do not appear to matter.

From Productivity Strategy to Business Case: Choosing a Cost-Effective Intervention for Workplace Innovations
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. CENTRUM, 2012) Oeij, Peter; de Looze, Michiel; ten Have, Klaas; van Rhijn, Gu; de Graaf, Bart
The article presents an approach to developing cost-effective interventions for workplace innovations for entrepreneurs who seek to enhance the productivity of an organization. The business case method is used to extend the Q4-model of productivity, which supports developing a productivity strategy in order to choose a cost-effective intervention. The approach offers the opportunity to trade off quantitative factors against qualitative factors; therefore, it is applicable to both profit sectors of industry and nonprofit sectors. The study sets out the steps in the approach and presents two case studies from different industrial sectors (public services and manufacturing) in which the approach has proved applicable. The Q4-model provides practical support to entrepreneurs in their efforts to innovate and improve productivity and is not for measuring the quantity and quality of input and output factors. Entrepreneurs are supported in developing a productivity strategy, combining a mix of quantity and quality input and output factors, and in the transformation of this strategy into a practical intervention. To facilitate the entrepreneurs to choose from different commercial options, the Q4-approach allows for the definition of its business case.

An Organizational Capability-Based Performance Measurement Model for Technology Conversion Process
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. CENTRUM, 2012) Gusberti, Tomoe; Echeveste, Márcia
The capabilities reconfiguration theme is presented in contemporary literature as a useful approach to business-model adjustment for the conversion of new technologies into processes, products, and services. This work presents a proposal for operationalization of this concept, developing an organizational capability measurement and evaluation model in the process of technology conversion in products and services. Applied to an enterprise started by an academic ‘spin-off’ company located in Brazil, the model presented as suited to the promotion of several relevant debates regarding capabilities evaluation, development, and cooperation, with the aim of creating an adequate organizational structure.

Accountability and Performance Measurement: A Stakeholder Perspective
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. CENTRUM, 2012) Harrison, Julie; Rouse, Paul; de Villiers, Charl
Accountability and management accounting have strong links, especially around performance reporting. Many approaches, such as the balanced scorecard and Ramanathan’s (1985) accountability framework, stem from management accounting research and practice. Accountability and performance measurement are linked inextricably; in fact, the interpretation of performance requires accountability as its reference. Further, to make comparisons across organizations requires the identification of whose objectives are being served. The primary stakeholders provide the best accountability perspective because their goals reflect, generally, the largest section of the community. In this paper, the focus is on accountability in a school context to identify performance-reporting imperatives important to the wider public sector, including the identification of relevant stakeholders and the determination of appropriate performance models. In this way, both a framework for school performance management and a method for developing such frameworks for other applications are addressed.

What Drives International Performance? Insights from Computer-Related Service Firms
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. CENTRUM, 2012) Etemad-Sajadi, Reza; Bezençon, Valéry
The aim of this paper is to understand the drivers of international performance for service firms. Qualitative interviews and a literature review are used to build the model which is tested empirically on computer-related (CR) service firms using structural equation modeling (SEM). Results show that standardized services and services requiring limited face-to-face contact positively influence international performance. In addition, joint venture and establishment abroad are the two most effective modes of entry. Finally, firm size and international experience are also significant drivers of international performance. As a practical implication, the research suggests that firms with limited capabilities should prefer to export standardized services requiring limited face-to-face contact.

Evaluating Recycling Sustainability Performance of E-waste Products
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. CENTRUM, 2012) Yeh, Chung-Hsing; Xu, Yan
This paper develops a new performance evaluation approach for evaluating the relative recycling sustainability performance of e-waste products in terms of their contribution to the corporate sustainability of an e-recycling company. A fuzzy pairwise comparison process is used to help make comparative assessments. A fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is used to give an overall sustainability performance score to each e-waste product, relative to others. A new optimal weighting model is developed to determine the optimal weights for the environmental, economic, and social sustainability dimensions that reflect the best sustainability interests of the e-recycling company. An empirical study is conducted to illustrate the approach.

An Analytical Approach to Predict the Performance of Thoracic Transplantations
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. CENTRUM, 2012) Oztekin, Asil
Predicting the performance of planned organ transplantation has proved to be a critical problem to solve. The purpose of this study is to present a data mining-based model for variable filtering and selection in order to predict the performance of thoracic transplantation via the graft survivability after the transplant. To this end, 10-fold cross-validated information fusion-based sensitivity analyses on machine learning models are conducted to receive an unbiased predictor variable ranking to be used in a subsequent Cox survival analysis. The study is unique in that it provides a mathematical means for medical experts to deal with thoracic recipients more efficiently and effectively.
