Practising science in Peru means facing adversity. Due to the country’s recent economic growth and despite its weak institutions, there is a growing (yet insufficient) interest in raising the investment in science, technology and innovation activities. However, how are scientists and engineers overcoming these difficulties? To answer these questions, this research focuses in the study of the experts engaged in scientific practice through the analysis of a particular case: the nanotechnology experts. The main hypothesis of this research is that to overcome these adversities, the nanotechnology experts have developed a peculiar scientific ethos, expressed by an individualized access to knowledge, networks and resources. Taking that into account, the main goal will be to characterize the current institutional situation of science and technology in Peru regarding scientific research.

The district of Sacsamarca, located in the province of Huanca Sancos in the region of Ayacucho in Peru, was one of the most affected districts by the Internal Armed Conflict during the eighties (CAI, in Spanish). Violence, as an exogenous variable, transformed the political, economic, and social land- scape within this community, and left tremendous losses that still have not been overcome. This paper analyzes the loss of agency among Sacsamarca’s inhabitants, within a framework of social resilience. For this purpose, we examine three crucial factors that were altered by the CAI: economic, politicaland demographic.

This research estimates the impact of robbery and theft in the household economies of the victims, according to their socioeconomic background. We analyze the current situation of Lima Metropolitana between 2011 and 2012, focusing on Cercado de Lima, a highly transited area where many people from different socioeconomic backgrounds converge. In this place, there is also a high rate and a high prevalence of robbery and theft. Based on a range of values involved in the average robbery and theft sustained in a standardized inventory of stolen goods, we estimate the percentage of the impact of the felony, such as the time of recovery of the goods that were substracted. This study allows us to conclude that the percentage of the impact of the felony and its recovery time are related to the socioeconomic strata, affecting mainly its lower levels.

The main objectives of this research, that took place in Lima between 2012 and 2013, were to analyze: a) the consequences of teenage motherhood in education, labor and family and b) the factors that influence the reconfiguration of the life trajectories of the teenage mothers after the pregnancy period. After interviewing thirteen teenage mothers that come from different socioeconomic backgrounds and whose children age range between 2-5 years old, we find two types of trajectories: a) the teenage mother trajectory and b) the teenage as mother trajectory. The results of this research suggest that the socioeconomic background, gender, teenage culture and motherhood, as well as the experiences, characteristics and aspirations of each woman are key factors that shape the life trajectories of teenage mothers.
