In early 1566, licenciado Polo Ondegardo, a reputed expert in Indigenous matters, sent archbishop Jerónimo de Loaysa a detailed —and until today unknown — carta-relación about native ideas and practices related to death. Polo wrote it at Loaysa´s request, a fact which requires explanation, given that he had already sent him an extensive treaty on Indigenous religions in 1559. This essay searches for answers by examining the debate on the exploitation of huacas and burials, the Taqui Onqoy, and the progressive shift from the first to the second evangelization in the Andean territory.

This essay examines published and unpublished documentary sources about the women who accompanied, inhabited, resisted, and negotiated the existence and legacy of Vilcabamba as an Inca refuge. The actions of the most visible women who operated between the Hispanic and the indigenous worlds, such as the coya or noblewoman Maria Cusi Huarcay, help us reveal lesser known yet important historical figures, tie up loose ends in colonial historiography, and strengthen a series of connections, such as the relationship between mining and women, polygamous alliances, and their conflicts, as well as the internal divisions within this new Inca order.

Drawing on the conceptualization of ethnic spaces, this article aims to characterize the daily life of women who inhabited the chiefdoms of Tarata, Tacna, and Codpa. The history of two mestizo women belonging to local chieftain families and that of the enslaved women owned by each of these women, is explored based on the wills of the former. Their situation is compared with that of two native women inhabitants of Belen town and two slaves of a priest who lived in the same doctrine, whose lives were reconstructed on the basis of parish books. Highlighting dissimilar aspects of their practical relationships allows for the differentiation of ethnic spaces.
